EXTENDED HEALtH insurance benefitS coverage
Psychotherapy services in private or public agencies are not covered as an OHIP benefit. OHIP pays for mental health services when you access services in a hospital emergency or out-patient clinic. Unfortunately, psychotherapy services are not covered by OHIP outside of a hospital. Your own extended health care insurance may wholly or partially reimburse you for some or all of the fees for seeing a Registered Psychotherapist or a Registered Psychotherapist under the Supervision of a Registered Psychologist.
You may claim any portion of your fees that are not covered by your extended health care insurance benefits on your income tax return. We are unable to bill insurance companies directly on your behalf. You are responsible for payment of fees at the time of your appointment. You will be reimbursed by your insurance company according to your benefit plan after you submit your receipt through the mail or electronically.
will my insurance pay for psychotherapy?
It is important you confirm the following with your insurance provider:
- What health professional your insurance company covers: Psychologist, Social Worker, Registered Psychotherapist, or Supervision under a Registered Psychologist?
- Do you need a referral from your family doctor to access psychotherapy services?
- How much insurance coverage do you have per session and per year (and per person if a family or couple)
- When your benefit year starts and ends.
- Are you able to co-ordinate benefits from multiple insurance plans (e.g., each partner of a couple may have extended benefits from their respective employers)?
Please remember that employers may change benefit providers and/or plans during the course of your treatment. As such, it is important that you remain up to date with your insurance policy and benefits. It is your responsibility ensure that our services would be reimbursed by your benefit provider prior to booking an appointment. will my EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (EAP) cover psychoTherapy?
Many employers and universities offer mental health support via an Employee Assistance Program (EAP), which is part of their Employee Benefit Package. We work with the EAP provider Optima Global Health to deliver psychotherapy and counselling for many individuals.
Please check with your employer or university to see if you are eligible for EAP counselling benefits. Those who use these benefits are not responsible to pay fees at the time of service rather fees are paid directly to our office.
