I founded Switzer to create a practice where clinicians can become exceptional therapists and clients can receive care that helps them move forward.
For clients, that means therapy that can help reduce distress, improve relationships, develop healthier coping, work through painful experiences, build confidence, and create greater resilience.
My vision grew from my training, more than 14 years in clinical practice, and my work supervising developing clinicians.
My training began in psychodynamic psychotherapy, including years of personal and group therapy. I continued into trauma therapy, EMDR, and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, while reading widely in psychology, history, and literature to deepen my understanding of people, relationships, and the human experience. My training taught me that becoming a therapist requires more than knowledge. It requires maturity, self-awareness, judgment, emotional capacity, and readiness for the responsibility of the work. I did not begin working with clients until I had developed the personal and professional readiness to take on that responsibility. I learned that what we bring into the room matters.
Clinical knowledge and skill are essential, but they are not enough. Moral character is not personality. It is how we use our position of trust—with humility, boundaries, accountability, and genuine commitment to the client. That belief shapes how I choose clinicians. I look beyond credentials for the character and maturity required to be trusted with another person's vulnerability. Potential is not the same as readiness.
Life has also shaped how I understand people. Becoming a wife and mother taught me to listen more carefully, question my assumptions, and recognize how easily we can believe we are listening when we are not. These experiences reinforced a belief at the heart of my work: Becoming a therapist is about becoming the person who can use their knowledge and self well. I understood how much clinicians need while they are becoming. Psychotherapy is demanding work.
Therapists need a place to be held, too.
Switzer is that place—a clinical community where clinicians can receive mentorship, reflect on their work, learn from one another, and be supported and held accountable. Even experienced clinicians need a community in which we can learn, challenge one another, and remain accountable to the quality of care we provide. That accountability ultimately serves the client.
Switzer is built to support both.

Choosing the right therapist is an important part of your therapy journey. Whether you’re looking for a therapist in Georgetown, for psychotherapy in Oakville, or virtual therapy finding a therapist who feels like the right fit can make a meaningful difference in your experience.
The right fit is about more than qualifications and experience.
It’s also about finding a therapist whose approach, communication style, and areas of expertise align with your needs, goals, and expectations.
We take the time to understand what you’re looking for so that your therapy experience feels personalized from the very beginning.
We offer a complimentary, no-obligation 15-minute consultation so you can connect with us before deciding to begin therapy. This brief conversation gives you an opportunity to share what brings you to counselling, ask questions, and learn more about how we work.
It’s also a chance to get a sense of whether you feel comfortable with our approach and the therapist you may work with.
It also gives us a chance to understand your needs and help determine which therapist may be the best match for you. Whether you’re seeking individual counselling, psychotherapy in Oakville, couples therapy in Georgetown, or prefer the flexibility of virtual therapy, we’ll help you explore what feels right for you.
There’s no pressure to book an appointment. Finding the right therapist is a personal decision, and we want you to feel informed and confident about taking that next step.
If virtual therapy better suits your schedule, location, or preferences, online sessions can provide a convenient and comfortable way to access support.
If you choose to move forward, regular sessions can be arranged with your therapist based on your needs, availability, and preference for in-person or virtual therapy. Consistent sessions help build a strong therapeutic relationship, maintain momentum, and support meaningful progress over time.

After more than two decades of working with people through some of the most difficult and defining moments of their lives, Shauna Switzer has come to believe that people are capable of profound healing and change.
She has seen how much courage it can take to look honestly at ourselves—to understand what has shaped us, face painful truths, and recognize the patterns that influence the way we think, feel, and relate to others.
For Switzer Counselling, therapy is not simply about helping someone feel better in the moment. It is about helping people understand themselves more deeply, heal what has hurt them, and create meaningful change in the way they live and connect with others.
This philosophy is at the heart of Switzer Counselling & Psychotherapy Associates.
Our mission is to help people heal, grow, and become more fully themselves. We provide a safe, compassionate, and clinically grounded environment where people can explore difficult experiences without judgment, develop greater self-understanding, recognize patterns that may no longer serve them, and discover new ways of relating to themselves and others.
Healing is not simply about removing symptoms or learning to cope. It can be an opportunity to become more aware, more resilient, more connected, and more intentional about the life you want to create. And personal transformation does not happen in isolation.
The way we heal affects the way we relate. The way we relate affects our families. Our families shape our communities.
When people become healthier and more secure in themselves, they are better able to build strong relationships, raise healthy families, contribute meaningfully to their communities, and create healthier environments for the people around them.
This philosophy also shapes our commitment to clinicians. We want to develop therapists who understand that psychotherapy is both a profession and a profound responsibility. Through clinical leadership, supervision, mentorship, training, collaboration, and ongoing learning, we strive to develop clinicians who are knowledgeable, thoughtful, highly skilled, and deeply committed to helping people change.
We are here to help people face what is difficult, understand what has shaped them, heal what can be healed, change what can be changed, and move toward lives that are more meaningful, connected, and whole.
That is the work of Switzer Counselling.
